Carefree Highway: Discovering the American West on Bicycle

In the summer of 1987, Mark Johnson and Kevin Nelson (co-owner of Bison Bookbinding & Letterpress) embarked on a four month, coast-to-coast bicycle tour from Connecticut to California. After a friendly local reporter from North Dakota gifted them nine rolls of black-and-white film, the young friends began chronicling their journey westward using vintage hand-me-down cameras. After completing the epic journey, the film was tucked away—a project for “later.” In honor of the thirty year anniversary of the trip, Kevin was inspired to finish the task. What he discovered was a time capsule of artful, intriguing images. They convey a window into some vestige of the old weird America, when life was more analog, less virtual, and two friends could discover the American West one pedal at a time.
